10 appointments at the dentist

When I was just studying, I kept visiting my parents' dentist.

That dentist was a somewhat older man, with whom I overcame many fears.

I can still smell the scent of his waiting room, where I sat shivering as a little boy, waiting for my turn. Hoping that this time I wouldn't have any cavities.

The dentist could not have done me a greater pleasure than to grunt at the end of the check-up: 'Everything is fine!'

Unfortunately, it didn't always go that way. He would often discover a spot on a tooth. Then it had to be drilled, tortured, rinsed and filled.

Fortunately, I have long since forgiven the old man for his torture of my youth.

One day the old dentist retired.

His replacement was a perfectionist. During my first appointment, his conclusion was quickly drawn: 'There is a lot of overdue maintenance on your teeth. Make only 10 appointments.'

'10 appointments?' I asked, surprised. 'Wouldn't it be better if I came for a whole day?' That seemed much more efficient to me.

"That's possible," said the new dentist, "but then you won't be able to close your mouth at the end of the day."

I prefer to do the things on my list in one go. 

Take old garden cushions to the environmental park (although it is cheaper to stuff them in a red bag from the municipality of Maastricht).

Getting a new mirror at the hardware store.

Bringing a chair to my son.

Picking up a repaired bicycle from the bicycle repair shop.
