10 Tips for a visit to Heerlen

Heerlen is buzzing! This once industrial city has shed its grey veil and manifests itself as a city for culture, shopping and good food.

1. Aambos

In the centre of Heerlen you will find a forest: the Aambos, a hillside forest with the Caumerbeek in the valley. The forest is 45 ha large and has an animal enclosure and deer park. As a hiker you will get steep slopes for your choice.

2. Corio Center

Bad weather? Keen shoppers can indulge themselves in the indoor Corio Center. Here you will find more than 30 shops, including eight food shops. The Corio Center has its own parking garage, so you don't have to walk far.

3. Pancratiusplein

The Heerlen catering industry is concentrated around the cozy Pancratius SquareYoung and old will find what they are looking for here, with various brown pubs and trendy bars such as the popular Nr. 7Even.

4. Café d'r Klinge

Café d'r Klinge, not to be missed from the national top 100 of best cafes, is a cafe where craftsmanship and hospitality are paramount. They have the complete range of Brand beers on tap and many more specialty beers in bottles.

5. Hoensbroek Castle

In the Hoensbroek district you will find Hoensbroek Castle, one of the oldest and largest castles in the Netherlands. About five centuries separate the oldest and youngest parts of the castle, making a visit a real journey through time!

6. Thermal Museum

The Thermal Museum bears witness to the rich history of the seemingly modern industrial city of Heerlen. Built on the remains of a Roman bathhouse, the museum gives you a glimpse into the largest and best-preserved ancient building in the Netherlands.

7. Glass Palace

The Glass Palace by architect Fritz Peutz is exemplary of the architectural style of Nieuwe Bouwen. For a long time, this glass palace housed the Schunck department store, not to be confused with the cultural institution of the same name that is now located there. On the fifth floor of the Glass Palace you will find brasserie Mijn Streek, which is worth a visit not only for the menu but also for the view.

8. Heerlen Murals

In recent years, Heerlen has built up a solid reputation in the field of street art. Various murals adorn the walls of otherwise bleak buildings. There are even guided tours, but you can of course also discover these murals on your own.

9. Moon Quarter

The prestigious Moon Quarter should soon become the modern heart of Heerlen, with shops, restaurants, offices and homes. With the central station it is also the calling card of the city.

10. Home furnishing boulevard

Home Furnishing Boulevard Heerlen is the largest home furnishing boulevard in Europe. You will find more than 50 stores in the area of ​​home furnishings, with the biggest crowd puller being an IKEA branch. Please note that the Swedish furniture giant has longer opening hours than the rest of the home furnishing boulevard.
