3 saving tips for your move

When you move, you will be faced with a lot of unexpected costs. A month of double rent or mortgage payments, for example, but also the costs of the move itself and the furnishing and painting of your new home.

Take advantage of these three moving tips.

1. Move yourself

Although a moving company provides the necessary convenience and security, hiring a professional mover can be quite expensive. Arranging your own moving transport and enlisting the help of family and friends is a lot cheaper.

A large van with a loading lift is spacious enough for your larger furniture and you do not need a truck driving license (large driving license). Your costs will then be limited to the rental of the van, the purchase or rental of moving supplies, such as moving boxes and moving blankets, and some refreshments for your helpers.

2. Avoid the weekend

It may seem obvious to move during the weekend due to your working hours, but it is much cheaper to move on a weekday.

A moving company charges a sometimes hefty surcharge for weekend moves. Moving on Sundays in particular is expensive – sometimes twice as expensive as on a weekday.

Renting a van on Saturdays is also often more expensive than on a normal working day.

3. Right to relocation expenses compensation

You may not know it, but you may be entitled to a relocation allowance. This is often the case when you are forced to move because your current home is being demolished or renovated.

The compensation is a contribution towards the costs of moving and furnishing your new home. For this moving costs compensation, a minimum amount of currently (January 2016) 5.857 euros applies. You are entitled to this amount in all cases.
