License plate registration now also on provincial roads
They have been hanging along highways for a while now and soon you will also find them along provincial roads: cameras that register your license plate. No less than 200 speed cameras will be equipped with these so-called ANPR cameras. Should you be worried about that? It just depends.
With ANPR, which stands for automatic number plate recognition, your license plate is scanned automatically. It is then checked whether the license plate holder has any outstanding fines or is on the run. If this is not the case, the data is deleted again. At least, for now …
There is a law in the making that will also allow the data of lawful drivers to be stored for four weeks. If a crime is committed with the car during the storage period, the police can check the movements of the car.
At the moment, the data is only stored in the event of a 'hit' or when it is needed for investigative purposes. In the latter case, permission from the Public Prosecution Service is required.
If you have no outstanding fines or have not committed or plan to commit a serious crime, you do not need to worry about the new law. If you are very concerned about your privacy or are suspicious of the government, this is a worrying development.
What do you think about license plate registration and data retention? Only good for catching crooks or a violation of your privacy? Let us know in a comment! Safe a rent a passenger bus in Susteren and surroundings you do at Adrem. We handle your data with care!
