Auto parts: timing belt

The timing belt: you know that you have to replace it every 100.000 kilometers. And that this is an expensive affair. But what exactly does this belt do? And why is it so important to keep an eye on its wear when you buy a used car?

How does the timing belt work?

A timing belt – or timing chain in some cars – simply connects the crankshaft to the camshaft, ensuring that the pistons and valves of the engine work together and that the car can ‘breathe’. By transferring the forces from the crankshaft to the camshaft, the timing belt plays an important role in the drive of the car. The timing belt, unlike the multi-belt, is not visible under the bonnet.

Timing belt broken – what now?

If the timing belt breaks, the crankshaft will still turn, but the camshaft will no longer be driven and the car will stop running. You also run the risk of engine damage. It is therefore wise to keep a close eye on the condition of the timing belt and to replace it in time. Replacing the timing belt is not cheap and can cost up to 1.000 euros depending on the make and type of car (and the garage where you have the belt replaced). But an engine that is running in the soup is of course a much more expensive affair.

Distribution chain

More and more cars are equipped with a durable timing chain instead of a timing belt. Unlike a belt, a chain lasts practically the entire life of a car. In principle, you never have to replace it.

Occasion

Are you going to buy a second-hand car? Then pay close attention to the condition of the timing belt. Especially when the car has driven 100.000 km or more. Check whether the timing belt has ever been replaced and how many kilometers the belt has been driven. Otherwise you may soon be faced with unexpected and high costs!
