Rent a car via SnappCar
SnappCar is a platform where people can share their car. Someone can offer their car for rent on the website and determine their own asking price. SnappCar claims to be 30 to 50 percent cheaper than regular car rental companies.
The idea behind SnappCar
Your car is standing still more often than it is driving. A waste, really. Why wouldn't you 'share' your stationary car with (or rent it to) others and earn some money that way? That question was at the cradle of SnappCar, which was founded in 2011 through crowdfunding.
How does SnappCar work?
Owners can easily register their car and enter a daily price between 13 and 55 euros. You can also determine the number of days per month (1-20) that you make the car available. The daily price usually includes 100 or 200 free kilometers. On top of that, you pay per kilometer driven.
The car is insured during the rental period via SnappCar. As a lessor, you do not have to worry about your no-claims discount being jeopardized. There is also 24/7 roadside assistance.
As a renter, you can search the website for someone in your area who offers their car. Have you found 'your' car? Then you can indicate the date and time you want to pick up and return the car. Now it is just a matter of clicking on 'rent' and waiting for a response from the landlord.
Of the amount you pay to SnappCar, approximately 70 percent goes to the rental company and 30 percent to SnappCar.
Disadvantages of SnappCar
SnappCar claims to be 30 to 50 percent cheaper than regular car rental companies. We took a small sample and SnappCar does indeed often appear to be cheaper. This is partly because the cars offered are usually older than the rental cars at regular car rental companies. The disadvantages in a nutshell:
- A disadvantage of SnappCar is that you are dependent on the supply in your area, unlike a car rental company, where you can choose from various brands and types in different classes.
- The average age of a Dutch car is almost ten years old. That will also apply to the offer on SnappCar. The fleet of a car rental company is usually a lot younger and excellently maintained.
- On SnappCar it is easy to rent a car for a day, but renting for a longer period, such as a week, turns out to be a lot more difficult. After all, the renter also drives his own car 'normally'.
- Many rental companies have a minimum age. For example, it is very difficult to rent a car on SnappCar if you are younger than 25 years old.
- At SnappCar you can rent a car per day, while at car rental companies you can also rent a car for just an hour or part of a day.
- The supply of moving vans on SnappCar is limited. At this moment (reference date 28-6-2016) there is not a single van to be found near Maastricht or Heerlen. This while vans are among the most rented vehicles of car rental companies.
- Finally, as a platform for private individuals, SnappCar is in principle not suitable for business tenants.
The future of SnappCar
Will everyone share their car in the future? No. People who need their car every day to travel to work or take the kids to school will not be so quick to rent out their car. The irony is that the people who rent out their car via SnappCar are also the ones who would benefit from renting one. But that makes sense.
Would you share your car with someone else or do you perhaps already have experience with the phenomenon of car sharing? Let us know in a comment! A rent a car in Urmond and surroundings you can of course also just go to Adrem.
