Are you allowed to drive a rental car on toll roads? And how do you pay for them?

Are you allowed to drive a rental car on toll roads? And how do you pay for them?

Are you traveling with a rental car, either domestically or abroad? Chances are you'll encounter toll roads along the way. But are you even allowed to drive on them with a rental car? And what about paying the toll? This article explains what you need to know before driving onto a toll road.

Can you drive a rental car on toll roads?

Yes, with a rental car, you can use toll roads, toll bridges, and toll tunnels. There are no restrictions from Adrem or other rental companies. However, you must pay the toll yourself, just as you would with your own car.

Toll roads are mainly found in countries like France, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, and Austria. But you'll also encounter them in the Netherlands, for example, at the Westerschelde Tunnel or the Kilt Tunnel.

How do you pay tolls with a rental car?

There are different ways to pay tolls, depending on the country you are driving in:

  1. Cash or by debit/credit card

At traditional toll booths, you usually pay immediately. You take a ticket upon entry and pay upon exiting the toll zone.

  1. Automatic toll collection (vignette or box)

Some countries require a vignette (such as Switzerland or Austria) or an electronic device (such as Portugal or Italy). These aren't standard in all rental cars. Therefore, inquire beforehand about what you need and whether you need to arrange anything extra for your destination.

Be careful at border crossings

Not every rental company allows you to simply cross the border. If you plan to drive your rental car abroad, always indicate this in advance when you book. Adrem can then inform you about the rules and any additional requirements, such as toll stickers or environmental stickers.

What happens if you don't pay your toll?

If you drive on a toll road without paying or without a vignette in a mandatory area, you can receive a fine. In some countries, this fine is automatically sent to the vehicle owner. The rental company can then pass this cost on to you, possibly with an administrative fee.

So make sure you're well prepared. Avoiding tolls is often more expensive than paying them properly.

FAQ

Is the toll included in the rental price?

No, tolls are not included in the rental price. You pay these costs yourself during the trip.

Do I have to pay tolls afterwards or immediately?

That depends on the country. Usually, you pay immediately, but in some countries, you'll receive the bill later, for example, via an online system or camera recognition.
