Buying out the excess on a rental car: worthwhile or a waste of money?

Anyone who rents a car almost always has to pay a deductible. This is the amount you have to pay if damage occurs to the rental car. Many people are unsure about whether they should buy out the deductible. In this article, we explain exactly what the deductible entails, when buying it out is wise, and when it might not be necessary.

What is the deductible for a rental car?

The deductible is the portion of the damage you pay if something happens to your rental car. This could include damage from a collision, parking damage, or window damage. Even if you're not responsible, a deductible may apply.

At Adrem, the standard deductible depends on the vehicle type. For passenger cars, it's €1.000, and for vans, it's €1.250. These amounts are known in advance and clearly stated during the booking process.

What does buying out the deductible mean?

Buying out means you pay extra to lower your deductible. You essentially buy off part of your financial liability.

At Adrem there are two options:

  • You retain the full deductible (standard)
  • You can reduce your deductible by paying a daily surcharge to €250 (car) or €350 (van)

Please note: full redemption of the deductible is not possible at Adrem not possible.

Is it wise to buy out the deductible?

That depends on your situation. Here are some considerations:

Buying out can be smart if:

  • You drive a new or expensive vehicle
  • You travel long distances or rent for several days
  • You are driving in an unfamiliar environment or in heavy traffic
  • You want certainty and want to avoid unexpected costs

Buying out is less necessary if:

  • You take a short trip and drive carefully
  • You are already insured through a credit card or travel insurance
  • You are willing to take the risk of additional costs

Please note: external insurance companies often reimburse costs afterwards and not always in full.

How much does it cost to buy out the deductible?

At Adrem, you pay a daily surcharge to reduce your deductible. The exact price depends on the vehicle and is displayed when you make your reservation. On average, the surcharge ranges from €12,50 to €17,50 per day.

What does deductible buyout not cover?

Even if you lower your deductible, some damages are excluded. For example:

  • Damage due to reckless driving
  • Driving under the influence
  • Damage to tires or interior (unless otherwise agreed)

Therefore, always read the terms and conditions of your rental agreement carefully.
