Refueling rental car

Car rental fuel policies explained: full-full, full-empty & more

Planning to rent a car? You'll need to consider fuel regulations. While this might seem like a minor detail, it can make a significant difference in both cost and convenience. In this article, we'll explain the various fuel regulations available when renting a car and what to look out for.

What is a fuel policy?

A fuel policy determines the condition of your rental car when you pick it up and return it, including the fuel tank. Various agreements are available, depending on the rental company and the vehicle type. At Adrem, we like to make things clear and fair for you.

What fuel regulations are there?

  1. Full-full arrangement

This is the most transparent and customer-friendly option:

  • You pick up the car with a full tank.
  • You return it with a full tank.

If you do not fully refuel the car before returning it, additional refueling charges may apply.

Advantage: you only pay for what you use
Please note: do not forget to refuel just before returning

  1. Full-empty arrangement

In this arrangement:

  • You pick up the car with a full tank.
  • You return it without refueling.

The rental company will fill up the tank themselves, but often charges a surcharge for this. So you'll pay more than the normal fuel price.

Advantage: quick and easy returns
Disadvantage: You may pay for fuel you haven't used

  1. Empty-empty arrangement

You receive the car with an empty tank and must return it empty. This is difficult to estimate and is therefore almost never done anymore.

Risk: difficult to drive exactly empty, you quickly pay too much

What is the fuel policy at Adrem?

At Adrem, we always work with the full-full policy. You receive the car with a full tank and return it with a full tank. This way, you know exactly what you're getting and you'll never pay too much.

Tip: Always return the car with a receipt from the nearest gas station. That way, you'll know for sure that everything is in order.

What happens if I don't return the tank with a full tank?

If the tank isn't full when you return it, we'll refill it. We'll charge the current price per liter, plus a small refueling fee. The cost will be deducted from your deposit or credit card afterward.
