Grey wagtail gets paternity leave

While I'm writing in the garden, a strange bird keeps flying around me. And I mean a real bird.

I don't know anything about birds.

I prefer to follow my grandfather's line. He used to tell me that there are actually only 2 types of birds: siskins (which fly through the air) and drift siskins (which swim in the water). Easy, right?

The bird flying around me is yellow on the underside and has a long tail. The creature can't sit still at all. He (or she of course, I can't see that) is constantly bobbing his tail and backside. Nervous.

Curious I look up what kind of bird this could be. I know canaries can be yellow, but the top of this bird is dark and the tail is much longer.

After seeing several pictures, I know for sure: the bird flying around me is a yellow wagtail. Strange, because I think it is a small bird. How small is the little yellow wagtail?

And he is building a nest. In our gutter. Because there is another strange yellow bird flying around: the partner.

On the bird protection website I read that the young are cared for by the male after they have fledged. He therefore gets paternity leave to care for his children.

The female already starts building a new nest for the second clutch.

Phew, what busy creatures!

Are you also such a busybody when building or renovating your house? To the hardware store, flooring specialist, curtain store, lamp store or ikea?

You can always fly back and forth with your car.

If the items become too big for your car, I would be happy to help you with a van. Feel free to come and rent one!
