Many people wonder why a credit card is required when renting a car. At Adrem, it depends on the vehicle type. In this article, we explain how deposit payments work, when a credit card is required, and how to ensure everything is arranged correctly.
What does the credit card do when renting?
When you rent a car, you always pay a deposit. This deposit is temporarily reserved in your name. At Adrem, this is done by debit or credit card, depending on the vehicle category.
- For small cars and vans You can simply pay the deposit with a debit card.
- For medium or large vehicles a credit card is required.
In that case, a credit card offers additional security: the deposit is reserved (blocked), but not immediately debited. Only in the event of damage or additional costs will the charge actually be debited from your card.
How much is the deposit?
The deposit at Adrem is minimum €250The exact amount depends on the vehicle type and the duration of your rental. You will see this amount when you make your reservation.
What happens to the deposit?
If you return the car undamaged and as agreed, the full deposit will be released. If you paid by card, you'll usually receive a refund within three business days. If you paid by credit card, the reservation will be canceled—depending on your bank, it may take several business days for you to see the refund.
What if there is damage?
If damage is found to the rental car, the repair costs will be deducted from the deposit. Any additional costs (such as administration or roadside assistance) will also be settled by credit card or debit card. You will always receive a breakdown of these costs.
Can I rent without a credit card?
Yes, that's possible—but only for smaller vehicles or vans. You'll then pay the deposit with a debit card in your name. For more expensive vehicles, a credit card is required. This is how Adrem ensures everything is safe and fair for both parties.
