Can I fill up with E10 fuel?
Anyone who ever fills up in Belgium or Germany will come across E10 fuel at the pump. What is that actually? And can you just put it in your tank?
In Belgium, where petrol stations are required to offer E10, the fuel is the replacement for Euro 95. In Germany, both fuels are often still offered. E10 is also available in some places in the Netherlands, but is not yet mandatory here, as is the case in Belgium and France.
What is E10?
E10 is a mix of 90 percent regular gasoline (Euro 95) and 10 percent bioethanol. Bioethanol is alcohol obtained from the fermentation of sugars, usually from wheat or corn. Bioethanol is produced in a more environmentally friendly way than fossil fuels and its promotion is one of the EU's additional measures for lower CO2emissions.
Is E10 harmful to my car?
Ethanol is more aggressive than regular petrol and can affect the fuel pump, hoses and seals in some cars. In about 90 percent of cars, its use does not cause any problems. Especially in older cars, long-term use can cause problems in the long term. Incidentally filling up with E10 will not quickly cause problems in unsuitable cars either.
Tank advice
Our rental cars are generally new cars (with the exception of the classic cars). That is why you can safely fill up your rental car with E10.
If you have an older car with a petrol engine (built before 2000), it is better to fill up with normal Euro 95 or Euro 98. On this site you can check whether your car is suitable for E10. If you have no choice but to fill up with E10, do not fill up with more than necessary and fill up at another petrol station with Euro 95.
Another disadvantage of E10 is that bioethanol contains less energy than regular petrol. As a result, fuel consumption is 1,5 to 2 percent higher. That quickly saves a few tens of euros per year.
What do you put in your petrol car? Euro 95 or a premium fuel with a higher octane content? And what is your opinion on E10 fuel? Rent a car in Brunssum or area near Adrem and have a question about fueling? Please feel free to contact us.
