A sober view on electric driving
If it were up to the government, we would switch en masse to electric driving in the coming years. Why don't we have fully electric vehicles in our fleet yet? Simple: because of the high depreciation, that would drive up our rental prices. Plus: is electric driving currently as 'green' as we all think?
The answer to that last question is a simple 'no'.
carbon dioxide
Did you know, for example, that more CO2 (carbon dioxide) is emitted than during the production of a 'normal' car? This is mainly due to the production of the battery. Of course, electric cars make up for this as soon as they hit the road. An electric car is cleaner than a petrol or diesel car during its entire lifespan. However, we must make some comments here.
Our rental cars are replaced after a number of years and then start a second life as used cars. At that moment a car or bus, including the manufacturing process, does not produce more CO2 produced than an electric car. This is based on the assumption that the electricity that an electric car runs on does not always come from sustainable sources.
Batteries environmental problem
At the moment, large-scale recycling of old batteries from electric cars is not yet profitable. Of course, that will change as more electric cars come onto the road, but at the moment, many batteries simply end up in landfills in countries like China. Not exactly environmentally friendly.
Motor vehicle tax
Electric cars are currently exempt from motor vehicle tax. This means that electric drivers do not contribute to the maintenance of the road network, while their electric vehicles are heavier than their petrol or diesel counterparts. Not entirely fair, if you ask us. Moreover, petrol and diesel drivers are already effectively paying the subsidy that you will receive from 2021 on the purchase of electric vehicles.
Hydrogen fuel of the future?
Isn't the environment close to our hearts? Nothing could be further from the truth. Electric driving will become increasingly greener, but is currently not as green as some would have us believe. Moreover, we think that the hydrogen car will eventually overtake the electric car. Perhaps sooner than you think.
What is your opinion on the government’s plans? Will your next car be electric – why or why not? Rent a passenger bus in Maastricht? That is possible at Adrem Car Rental!

The energy efficiency of hydrogen cars is only about 30% from the grid. The energy efficiency of a fully electric car is about 90% from the electricity grid. So you need three times as many windmills or solar panels for hydrogen cars than for a BEV! That is why the hydrogen car will never make it.
