'Gaybrapad' and priority rules

Since 2015, Maastricht has a rainbow zebra crossing, at the Vrijthof. This so-called 'gaybra crossing' with six colored instead of white stripes, has replaced the old zebra crossing.

Because this gaybra crossing was placed in the wrong place, it was temporarily removed. It will return in the spring of this year. But what about the priority rules on this colorful zebra crossing?

Gaybra crossings may look cheerful, but they also cause a fair amount of confusion. The Vrijthof is now closed off to car traffic with zinc posts. But what if these zinc posts are down – do you then have priority as a pedestrian on the gaybra crossing?

The short answer is 'no'. A gaybra crossing is not an official pedestrian crossing, despite the similarities with a zebra crossing, where white stripes are applied to the (black) road surface. A zebra crossing is further indicated by a traffic sign or traffic lights.

Work of art

A gaybra crossing is nothing more or less than a work of art on the road surface, to draw attention to the acceptance of diversity in the areas of sexuality and gender.

Drivers do not have to give way to pedestrians who want to cross on a gaybra crossing. Unless other traffic measures require this of course. So watch out!

At a 'normal' zebra crossing, you do have priority as a pedestrian. If you do not give priority as a motorist/motorcyclist, moped rider or cyclist? Then this can cost you a fine of 380, 260, and 150 euros respectively.
