Use your turn signal (correctly)!
Not indicating has been in the top 10 of traffic annoyances for years. Your indicators, or flashing lights, are the only means you have to communicate with other road users. So use them correctly.
Lateral displacement
In principle, you use your indicators for every lateral movement: when driving away, turning, leaving a roundabout, overtaking, merging and changing lanes. You indicate with them what you are going to do or want to do. This way, others know what you are planning. For all lateral movements, you first look in your mirrors (inside/outside) and over your shoulder because of the blind spot. And don't forget to look at what is happening in front of you.
Trade directly
Many drivers actually use their indicators incorrectly. They first indicate and then check whether they can safely carry out the intended action. The world upside down. It is important to act immediately after indicating. Except if, for example, you want to merge into a traffic jam. Then you can use your indicator as a friendly request to let yourself in between. However, do not claim 'your' spot and wait until someone lets you in between.
To catch up
When overtaking, or changing lanes, you do not only indicate to the left, but also to the right when you return to the right lane. Many older drivers sometimes 'forget' this, because this was not mandatory in the past.
Add out
When leaving the motorway, indicate your direction in good time. My driving instructor taught me to indicate just past the penultimate sign announcing an exit, approximately 300 m before the exit. Leave your indicator on until the white point. This is especially important for combined entry/exit lanes.
Rotunda
There are (still) many misunderstandings about the correct use of the indicator on a classic roundabout. When approaching the roundabout, you indicate. Are you taking the third exit? Then indicate to the left. At the roundabout, you turn off the indicator. When leaving the roundabout, you indicate again, to the right of course.
Want to know more about the correct use of your indicators? Consult article 55 of the Road Traffic Regulations and Signs (Rvv).

In this blog post I can completely find my way regarding direction.
In my opinion, the situation with direction indicators is sad, they look like jack-in-the-boxes.
They suddenly appear, often you can see it coming and you are alert.
I pick up a few cars and keep an eye on the first one so he can suddenly throw it in front of it.
Sometimes I wonder if you are actually qualified to drive a car.
At roundabouts I really look closely at the car that I see coming, sometimes they help and still indicate the direction, there are also rakes that don't work.
I am not on the road professionally, this experience is only as a road user
If you want to turn left at a roundabout, it is not mandatory to indicate, in fact, it is undesirable. There are at least 2 reasons for this.
– There is (hopefully) enough blinking already
– At the 2nd exit you are still flashing left, and the other road users do not know where you are going, after all, they do not know where you entered the roundabout either.
If no one blinks to the left, everything is much clearer.
