The correct sitting position in the car is very important for your health and safety. If you do not adopt a good sitting position, you can get back and neck problems and airbags cannot work optimally in the event of a traffic accident. In this blog we will therefore tell you what the correct sitting position in a car is and how you should adjust your car seat to achieve this position.

What is the correct sitting position in a car?

Everyone sits differently in the car. One person sits completely upright and close to the steering wheel, another a little crooked and yet another a little slouched. Especially when you are in a traffic jam and look around you, you see the strangest seating positions passing by. It probably also happens often enough that you are slouching or perhaps sitting with a bent leg. Nevertheless, the correct seating position in a car is very important. But what exactly is the correct seating position?

To get a good sitting position, sit upright in the car, with your pelvis as far back in the seat as possible. If your seat has lumbar support, try to create as much support for your lower back as possible. Place your head against the headrest and look straight ahead.

Adjusting the car seat correctly

To get the right sitting position, it is important that your car seat is set up correctly. The backrest should support your back and shoulders as much as possible and you should be able to operate the pedals properly. How do you ensure this?

First, you check whether the seat is far enough back or forward. To do this, slide the seat forward until you can fully depress the gas and brake pedals with your right leg or until your left leg touches the clutch. When depressing the pedals, your upper leg should always rest on the seat, as you have to operate the pedals from your ankles. When your legs are slightly bent, you have reached the correct position.

Next, you also need to adjust the headrest correctly. It should not be set too low, but it should also not protrude above the head.

Finally, you need to adjust the backrest of your car seat correctly. Most people sit a little too far back while driving. To achieve the ideal sitting position, the seat angle between your upper legs and torso should be about 90 degrees. This is a straight line.

Now that you have adjusted your car seat, you can adjust the steering wheel. When you hold the steering wheel, your elbows should be slightly bent. Therefore, adjust the steering wheel so that you can rest your wrists on the top edge of the steering wheel.
