Rental tip: watch out for the surcharge for a second driver!

You are going to rent a car. Then – depending on the company where you are going to rent the car – there may be various surcharges applicable. One of these is a possible surcharge for a second driver. An additional charge that we incidentally did not .

Second driver

Perhaps you plan to share your rental car with someone else during the rental period. Or you simply want a fellow passenger to be able to take over the wheel for you if necessary. For such additional drivers (drivers other than the contractor) some car rental companies charge a surcharge. This can be a daily addition or a fixed surcharge for the entire rental period.

The terms and conditions vary by rental company. Some companies do not charge any surcharges for spouses or partners, while others charge a surcharge for all additional drivers, regardless of relationship.

Hiding additional drivers

As a renter, you may think you can outsmart the rental company and avoid this surcharge by not mentioning any other drivers. Nice try, but that can cost you dearly. If someone unknown to the landlord causes an accident, the damage may not be insured. And that risk is of course not worth it.

No surcharge, but please let us know

We do not have such a surcharge. The amount for the insurance remains the same, even with an additional driver. If you rent a car from us, you can easily let someone else drive 'your' rental car without it costing you a cent extra. Of course, that person must have a valid driver's license and must be known to us.

We therefore ask you for a copy of your driver's license. additional drivers. Only persons for whom we have a copy of the driving license are covered by the rental car insurance.

Closing comments

Before you rent a car, it is important to do your homework. Does the car rental company have a surcharge for additional drivers? And how much is that surcharge?

Even though we do not have such a surcharge, it is still important for the insurance to ask yourself who will be driving the rental car. The insurance must ultimately pay out in the event of damage, so they would like to know who they are actually insuring. This way you will not be faced with (unpleasant) surprises afterwards. Rent a car in the Geleen region? That's possible at Adrem!
