In 3rd gear to Zeeland
It must have been in the mid 70's.
My parents had a Citroën Dyane, a kind of luxury Duck.
We went on holiday for the first time.
To Zeeland. There was a caravan rented.
What do you take with you when you go on holiday for the first time with a young family?
A lot. Probably way too much. Just to be sure.
Swimwear. For when the weather is nice.
But also boots. For when the weather is bad. You never know in the Netherlands.
I still don't know how my father got everything in and on and on that little car. Amazing that there was still room for us (father, mother and 4 children).
I do remember the little car protesting.
He didn't go into fourth gear anymore, third gear was the maximum. At 50-60 km/h we raced over the highway to Zeeland. That took forever of course, but it did have the advantage that you had the idea of being incredibly far away from home.
I still remember how the car smelled. That smell of a car from the 70s is something I recognize from thousands.
And how the car sounded. From miles away you can recognize the typical 2-cylinder sound of a Duck or Dyane.
Do you recognize this? Sounds and smells from your childhood?
You can experience it again.
The Duck we rent still smells the same. And sounds the same.
You can take it to Zeeland.
But Limburg is also beautiful to drive in.
