Is Ford coming out with the first fully electric pickup?

The transport sector is the largest CO2-polluter and the share of cars in that is about 60 percent. The biggest polluters are large pick-up trucks and SUVs. Almost a rarity on Dutch roads, but a problem worldwide.

We are talking about cars like the Ford F-150, Ford Expedition, GMC Canyon, Nissan Frontier, Nissan Titan, RAM 1500, Toyota Highlander and Toyota Tacoma. Of these models, which are popular in North America, you will not find a single one in the Dutch sales top 100.

20 miles/gallon

To give you an idea of the consumption of these fuel guzzlers: with the RAM 1500 you get '20 miles per gallon'. That's 8,5 km on one liter of fuel. But a liter of gasoline costs only 0,62 euros in the US. That means you can drive a RAM 1500 in the US for the same amount of money as you would in Europe in a Peugeot 108. Purely in terms of fuel costs, that is.

Nearly 200 million large cars in US

In the US, where there are more than 270 million vehicles on the road, 71,5 percent of all vehicles are pickups, SUVs, vans and crossovers. That's 195 million vehicles. If you think sales of these models are declining, think again. These gas guzzlers are actually selling more, making them the largest share of global sales increase of CO2 emissions.

Ford once again a pioneer

For automakers whose largest market is North America, such as Ford and Toyota, the challenge is to electrify their large vehicles. Ford, General Motors, Tesla (with its futuristic Cybertruck) and a few smaller start-ups are engaged in a fierce battle to bring the first fully electric pickup truck to market. Ford appears to have the best credentials. An all-electric version of the Ford F-150 is scheduled for 2021.

Explorer paves the way

You can safely call that a statement from Ford. Because the F-150 has been Ford's best-selling vehicle for 42(!) years. Not only in the US, but worldwide. The Ford F-150 will also be available as a hybrid version. Otherwise, the culture shock for the loyal Ford driver might be a bit too big. They can already get used to the idea, because even before the F-150, a fully electric Ford Explorer will be on the market. Also certainly no small one.

How far will he go?

Of course, the burning question remains: what is the range of the fully electric F-150? We still don't know the answer to that. There will also be a fully electric Ford Mustang, with a range of almost 500 km. But that one is about half as heavy. So we can't deduce much from that.

Would you like to drive around guilt-free in the beastly Ford F-150?
