Short travel guide for/through South Limburg
I myself was not born and raised there. But after years of living there, I feel somewhat like a local in Limburg. Especially in South Limburg. And for practically every outsider who visits the southern part of the province, it is love at first sight.
Best time of the year to visit
You could argue that the hills in South Limburg look most beautiful when they are covered in snow. But when you pick a date for your holiday or weekend away, you don't know whether that will be the case. Personally, I think South Limburg and especially the Heuvelland are most beautiful in early autumn. The colour gradations on the wooded slopes guarantee spectacular views. One of my favourite places in the Heuvelland is Gulpen with its Gulperberg. The Brunssummerheide, with its heathland that is unique to Limburg, is also beautiful then. Don't you like wet weather? On a beautiful summer day, you can imagine yourself in South Limburg in the South of France or Tuscany.
More than the Heuvelland
The terms South Limburg and Heuvelland are often used interchangeably. But they do not mean the same thing. Although the Heuvelland is about half of South Limburg in terms of surface area, there is much more to discover. The Grensmaasvallei, the northern tip of South Limburg, is an area that is often skipped on the way south. While the city of Sittard is certainly worth a visit. And while the calf biters of the Heuvelland pose a challenge to many hikers and cyclists, the flatter Grensmaasvallei is much softer in character. Parkstad, the former Eastern Mining Region, also offers plenty of natural beauty. In addition to various tourist attractions, such as GaiaZOO, Mondo Verde and SnowWorld. Parkstad also borders Germany to a large extent. A day trip to Aachen, for example, is therefore quickly made from here.
Maastricht and Valkenburg
When visiting South Limburg, few tourists skip Maastricht and Valkenburg. And rightly so. Valkenburg is the epicentre of the Heuvelland and has traditionally had a tourist function. The town is therefore bursting with hotels, restaurants, cafés and tourist attractions. In addition to being a cycling city, Valkenburg is also increasingly developing into a health resort and wellness resort. Maastricht is of course the capital and largest city in Limburg. The city's inhabitants are true Burgundians, an attitude to life that is infectious to visitors to the city. There is so much to see and do in Maastricht, and you can shop endlessly. Explore South Limburg
Of course you can explore South Limburg in your own car. No own transport? Then you can book a cheap car with us renting a car during your weekend away or holiday in South Limburg. Or a passenger van if you need a bit more space. Want to explore South Limburg in style? Then rent one of our classics. Please note that our classic cars are stored in Heerlen and can only be picked up here. You may not say it about your own 'children', but my favorite is The boss. A real eye-catcher. Keep an eye on the weather forecast, because this car has no (folding) roof! Did you know that I built this car myself?
