More and more electric and hybrid cars are being driven, which means there is an increasing need for charging options. You can charge your electric car at public charging stations, but you can also have a charging station installed privately or at work. However, what is the smartest option when looking at the costs of charging itself? In this blog we will therefore answer the question: What does electric charging actually cost? We will also immediately look at the different charging options and which of these is the most advantageous.

What is the average cost of charging a car electrically at a charging station?

What does it cost to charge an electric car on average now? This also depends on whether you charge your car at a normal public charging station or at a special fast charging station. In addition, the capacity of your battery naturally determines how much money you spend on a charge. With a normal public charging station, you pay for installation, maintenance and the like. The rates of a charging station therefore vary considerably and depend on the provider and the location. On average, the rate in 2024 is €0.25 to €0.55 per kWh. For an electric car with a battery of 60 kWh, you will therefore pay approximately €24 for a full battery. With a average range Then you drive about 300 kilometers with it, which will cost you approximately €0.08 per kilometer.

Costs of electric charging at a fast charging station

A fast charging station is a bit more expensive, because this is also the fastest method to quickly recharge your car. However, you can often take out a subscription for this, so that you pay relatively less per kWh that you use. With a fast charging station, you must take into account a charging rate that is between €0.50 and €0.70. In the above example of an electric car with a battery capacity of 60 kWh, you pay €36 for a full car with fast charging, which corresponds to approximately €0.12 per kilometer.

charging electric at home

Is it cheaper to charge at home or at a charging station?

You pay an average of €0.40 at a charging station. Charge at home at your own charging station is generally cheaper than at a public charging station. You then pay the kilowatt hour price directly to your own energy supplier. Especially when you also have solar panels on your roof, you can provide the necessary power yourself. What does it cost to charge an electric car at home? This depends somewhat on what your energy supplier charges. On average, home charging rates are €0.32. In the example used earlier, this means that you pay €19 for a full battery when charging at home. This means approximately €0.06 per kilometer.

Loading prices on work

The cheapest option for now remains charging your electric car at work. At work, a large-scale electricity rate is charged, which means you are cheaper per kWh. At the average employer, you can charge for €0.11 per kilowatt hour, which means you only pay €6.60 for a full battery. Per kilometer, this is an amount of €0.02

Is electric charging cheaper than refueling?

A electric or hybrid car may be more expensive to buy, but is cheaper to use. Not only does an electric car have fewer moving parts, it also drives more efficiently. The costs of both maintenance and electricity are therefore lower than for a car that runs on diesel or petrol. If you drive an electric car 15.000 kilometres per year, you will pay around €1200-€1800 per year for electricity. If you use a car that runs on fuel for the same number of kilometres per year, you will spend an average of €2100.
