The best places to rest in the Heuvelland
Suppose you are touring through the Heuvelland on a sunny day. On foot, by bike or in one of our classics. Sooner or later you will get thirsty of course. Or hungry. Which rest areas in the Heuvelland are worth stopping for?
Recreation area The Nightingale
You will find De Nachtegaal in Meerssen. Somewhere halfway between Maastricht and Valkenburg aan de Geul. You can enjoy walking and cycling in the area. But you can also easily get there by car. And that is very worthwhile. You can go there for a hot or cold lunch and dinner, but also for a snack. The drinks menu offers something for everyone. They have about ten beers on tap, including their own Nightingale, an amber beer. Feel free to have another one; the kids will enjoy themselves in the playground!
Boscafé 't Hijgend Hert
Boscafé 't Hijgend Hert is a household name even beyond the region. You will find the café in the triangle Vijlen-Epen-Vaals, in the Kerperbos, part of the larger Vijlenerbos. It is difficult to choose between the rustic atmosphere of the brown café and the beautiful view from the panoramic terrace. If you can even get a seat, because on days off it is always pleasantly busy. The menu with its typical regional dishes fits in perfectly with the atmosphere in the café. Het Hijgend Hert also has its own beer: Hert, Vijlenerbosbier, a blond beer. For home, in addition to a blond, a brown bottled beer is also available.
Tivoli Chalet
Villa is French for 'hut' and this little hut is not much more than that. As you would expect from an establishment like this, you can enjoy hearty (regional) dishes in a delicious Burgundian way. And that is also necessary if you are going to take a brisk walk in the beautiful surroundings, uphill towards Vilt or Berg en Terblijt.
The Geulhemermolen Inn
If you follow the Geul from Chalet Tivoli towards Geulhem, sooner or later you will arrive at Herberg De Geulhemermolen. 'De Meule' houses a café and restaurant, divided over various characteristic rooms. As befits a real inn, you can also spend the night there, to continue your journey the next day. The restaurant is based on the French bistro(t). The drinks menu is impressive. Whether you like beer, wine or something stronger. In the drinks cabinet you will find a rich selection of changing whiskies. Sláinte!
Tavern 't Koetshoes
Taverne 't Koetshoes is located in the coach house of country house Kasteel Oost, a popular wedding location. It is a great base for a walk through the beautiful Geuldal. Taverne 't Koetshoes has a large terrace. But it is certainly worth going inside to take a look at the curious interior. You can wash down the dishes on the menu with one of the delicious Kasteel beers. The children can have fun in the adjacent playground.
