Take your receipt with you
There is a long line of people standing silently in front of me.
Everyone has obediently grabbed a shopping cart and has neatly joined the back of the line.
You could see in advance that this line would be at least 3 minutes, maybe even an hour. But yes, going to the supermarket has become an outing these days. Even if you have to wait 3 minutes before you can get in.
What happened to make people in Belgium so obedient to law and order?
I live in Belgium and work in the Netherlands.
In these times of corona crisis you notice the differences.
For example, grocery shopping. Despite the lines, I have to do my grocery shopping in Belgium.
There are permanent border controls again. During those controls I am not allowed to have any groceries with me. Any pointless, unnecessary movement is prohibited. Also pointless movements of groceries.
After 3 minutes I am allowed to enter. It is not busy in the supermarket. That is no longer allowed.
But I see everyone secretly enjoying themselves. Away from home for a while.
You would almost go through all the shelves three times just for fun.
I do my shopping at my leisure.
What is sanitary napkin called in French again? (I live in Wallonia) Oh yes, something with napkins: Serviettes hygiéniques.
When my cart is full and my list is empty, I go to the checkout. I look for a nice long line.
Respect for the cashiers! There is little conversation, but every customer is a potential contagion…
My groceries are paid for neatly. The cashier hands out the receipt.
When I say that I don't need the receipt, he looks at me in complete shock.
Suppose I get pulled over and I have all these groceries in my car and no receipt! The officers might think I’m driving for fun and have just thrown a few groceries in my car for show. They might just conclude that I’m not necessarily moving myself. The cashier strongly advises me to take the receipt.
I thank him heartily for his concern, take the receipt and drive back home.
My groceries arrive home without government interference.
Shopping in Belgium may not be possible for you at the moment.
But in the Netherlands. If you look a bit, there are also supermarkets in the Netherlands with lines all the way out.
If I can help you with a car in the Stein region to carry all your groceries, I'd like to hear it: https://adremlimburg.nl/goedkoop-huren/auto-huren/
