New APK rules from 1 May 2018

On 1 May 2018, the new rules for the General Periodic Inspection (APK) of your motor vehicle came into effect.* What are the possible consequences for your car?

It's actually quite crazy that you have to have your older car inspected every other year, regardless of the number of kilometres you drive. The RDW now thought so too, and decided that from 1 May, cars that drive more kilometres, also have to be inspected more often.

Existing rules

Until now, petrol cars (and hybrid/electric vehicles), regardless of mileage, only had to be MOT tested after four years and then inspected twice every two years. This means that a car only has to be inspected annually after eight years, regardless of mileage.

Cars running on LPG or diesel must be inspected for the first time after three years and then annually.

160.000 km? Annual inspection!

According to the new rules, a car must be inspected annually after 160.000 km, regardless of age. If you drive a good 30.000 km per year, your car must be inspected annually after five years instead of eight.

'Abraham' gets clemency

The old-timer regulation is being relaxed. Cars older than fifty years are exempt from the APK requirement from 1 May. Currently, only cars built before 1960 are exempt from this requirement. Cars younger than fifty, but older than thirty years, must be inspected every two years. Nothing will change in this respect.

* At the time of writing, it is not yet 100% certain whether the new rules will come into effect on this date. Rent a car in the Brunssum region? That is possible at Adrem, of course the cars are properly inspected!
