Do you need to break in a new car?
There’s something magical about new cars; the shiny paint, the fresh interior and the promise of trouble-free driving pleasure. But before you can fully enjoy your brand new vehicle, there’s one important step you can’t afford to skip: breaking in your new car. This process, often overlooked in our rush to get on the road, is incredibly important for the long-term performance and durability of your car. Find out how to go about it and why breaking in your car is so important in this blog.
Do you need to break in a new car?
The answer to this question is, despite all the modern techniques of today, still “yes”. This is because in cars with a combustion engine, the individual parts have to interact with each other. If you make too many revolutions at once, you cause damage. Cylinders and piston rings, for example, have to be worked in, but certainly also the brakes. You have to ‘break in’ the brakes a bit for the first few hundred kilometres and you have to spare the shock absorbers.
This running-in mainly applies to cars with combustion engines and hybrid cars. Electric cars do not need to be run in for the engine. However, you do need to drive gently for the first few hundred kilometers for the tires, brakes and shock absorbers.
Do you also have to run in a motorcycle?
New engines also need to be run in, as this extends both the performance and the life of the vehicle. An engine, just like a car with a combustion engine, consists of many different loose parts that you have to get used to the load and circumstances.
How long should you run in a new car?
How long you need to run in your new car varies per component. The running-in period for your car tires is approximately 200 to 300 kilometers. For even tire wear, it is also advisable to check your tires after 1200 kilometers. swapping front tires with your rear tires. For your car's engine, it is recommended not to drive faster than 75% of the maximum speed for 1500 kilometers. Also, you should not drive higher than 75% of your maximum speed for that long. After 1000 kilometers, you should check your oil level last.
This is how the new car is run in
How do you know for sure that you are breaking in your car correctly? Follow these tips to break in your car correctly:
- When your engine is cold, you should keep the revs low. Ride easy for the first thousand kilometers.
- Brake gently and gradually.
- Avoid driving with heavy trailers so as not to overload the engine.
- Drive on a variety of roads, not just highways.
- Are you required to drive a lot on highways? Then don't use the cruise control, because that way your pistons can't shoot out while running in.
- The paint on your new car needs to harden, so don't immediately drive it through a car wash with hard brushes.
This is how you ride a motorcycle
You break in a motorcycle as follows:
