Brake pads and discs

Two important parts of your car's brake system are the brake pads and the brake discs. Both your brake pads and brake discs wear out. You should therefore have them checked regularly and replaced if necessary.

Brake pads

The brake pads of a car do not work much differently than those of a bicycle. Only in a car the brake pads are not pressed against the rim, but against the brake disc. As a result the brake discs wear and become thinner. When the minimum thickness is reached the brake pads must be replaced. When the brake pads are completely worn out, you hear a scraping sound. You are then braking 'iron on iron', and this is at the expense of your brake discs.

It is difficult to say how many kilometers you should (have) the brake pads replaced. The wear is strongly dependent on the use of the car and your driving behavior. If you drive a lot 'through the country' and brake a lot, the pads will of course wear faster than if you mainly drive on the highway. A new set of brake pads costs, including installation, around a hundred euros.

Brake discs

As mentioned, when braking, the brake pads are pressed against the brake discs. Just like the brake pads, the brake discs also wear out. Only much less quickly. But at some point you will have to replace them too. Replacing the brake discs always involves replacing the brake pads. This comes with an average price tag of 450 euros, depending on the make and type of car you drive.

New brake discs and also brake pads need to be 'broken in'. This means that you should not stand on the brakes for the first 100 km, unless this is absolutely necessary of course.
