Saving fuel: useful tips!

A liter of Euro 1,65 currently costs approximately 95 euros. And a liter of diesel costs almost 1,30 euros. Fuel prices have been lower in recent years. How can you save on fuel – apart from filling up as cheaply as possible? Well, simple. By paying attention to your consumption and adopting an economical driving style.

Tip 1: take the bike

Your car uses the least fuel when you 'just' leave it standing. Especially short trips, on a cold engine, are killing your fuel consumption. So it's better to walk or cycle to the local supermarket.

Tip 2: drive relaxed

Some people race from traffic light to traffic light. It is better to accelerate slowly and give the gas in a measured way. Also look ahead. Do you see that you will come to a standstill in a hundred meters? Then take your foot off the gas and let your car roll out.

Tip 3: Switch in time

In a petrol car, shift up a gear between 2000 and 2500 rpm (a bit earlier for diesel engines). Nowadays, you 'cruise' 50 kilometres per hour in fourth gear. And at 80 km/h, you should already have it in fifth. This can save you a lot of fuel. Do you need to accelerate quickly, for example when transitioning from built-up to unbuilt-up areas? Then shift down a gear.

Tip 4: Turn off your engine in traffic jams and before traffic lights

If you are standing still for a longer period of time, it is often worthwhile to switch off your engine. For example, in a traffic jam, at a railway crossing or 'slow' traffic light where you know you will be standing still for at least half a minute.

Many of our rental cars have an automatic start-stop system. This system switches the engine off when you are stationary and restarts immediately when you depress the clutch. To use this system, the car must be stationary. You put the gear in neutral and release the clutch.

Tip 5: pay attention to your car

The tire pressure and weight of your car also affect your fuel consumption. Therefore, make sure your tire pressure is correct and limit (load) weight where possible. Also note that roof boxes and bicycle carriers are bad for the aerodynamics of your car and increase your fuel consumption.

Economical driving is good for your wallet, your tires, maintenance costs and of course the environment. How do you save on your fuel costs? Let our followers know in a comment! Rent a car in Born and surroundings at Adrem? Then try to drive economically!
