Alarming number of Limburg provincial roads unsafe

Nearly 60 percent of provincial roads in Limburg are unsafe
furnished. At least according to a study by VIA, conducted in
order from ANWB. Only 40 percent of the N-roads have a
safe road design.

Provincial road relatively dangerous

Provincial roads are responsible for one in five traffic deaths and are therefore relatively more dangerous than national and municipal roads, as they make up a much larger part of the road network.

Safe road design and accident score

An unsafe road layout does not automatically mean a higher chance of accidents. Conversely, a safe road layout does not guarantee a low accident score. In other words, there are unsafely designed roads where relatively few accidents occur and safely designed roads with relatively many accidents. This is partly due to the traffic density.

If you look at the number of accidents, we can label 32 percent of the Limburg provincial roads as 'risky'. Two out of three of these 'accident roads' - or 22,55 percent of all provincial roads - are also unsafely designed. The chance of accidents can therefore be reduced by a safer road design. ANWB therefore calls on the province to take measures on these roads to improve traffic safety.
