Speeding violations slightly more expensive in 2018

Pressing the accelerator too far can earn you a slightly higher fine in 2018 than in the past year. Speeding will become more expensive, especially outside built-up areas. Minor speeding violations will not become more expensive.

Are you driving 20 kilometers per hour too fast outside built-up areas? Then you will pay a fine of 180 euros next year, while last year you paid 178 euros. The administration costs will remain the same this year, after they rose from 7 to 9 euros last year.

Overview of speeding violations

Below you will find an overview of all speeding violations that fall within the so-called Mulder law. These are the violations that can be dealt with under administrative law.

In brackets the difference compared to 2017.

Within built-up area

  • At 4 km/h: 27 euros (-)
  • At 10 km/h: 70 euros (-)
  • At 15 km/h: 131 euros (+2)
  • At 20 km/h: 188 euros (+2)
  • At 25 km/h: 252 euros (+3)
  • At 30 km/h: 329 euros (+4)

Outside built-up areas, on highways

  • At 4 km/h: 24 euros (-)
  • At 10 km/h: 66 euros (-)
  • At 15 km/h: 127 euros (+2)
  • At 20 km/h: 180 euros (+2)
  • At 25 km/h: 237 euros (+3)
  • At 30 km/h: 312 euros (+7)

Outside built-up areas, on motorways

  • At 4 km/h: 24 euros (-)
  • At 10 km/h: 62 euros (+1)
  • At 15 km/h: 116 euros (+1)
  • At 20 km/h: 167 euros (+2)
  • At 25 km/h: 220 euros (+3)
  • At 30 km/h: 279 euros (+3)

Other traffic violations

The amount of the fines for other traffic violations does not change all that much. Tailgating (up to 80 km/h.) for example will cost you 280 euros just like last year and unnecessary driving on the left 140 euros. Overtaking on the right will still cost you 230 euros, as will holding a mobile phone while driving. If you 'forget' to indicate, it will now cost you 95 euros: 5 euros more than last year.

What do we think?

As a car rental company, we naturally find road safety important. But fines should also be in proportion to the seriousness of the violation. That is not always the case, we think. We also think that especially minor violations should be dealt with more often with a stop and warning. That has much more effect than immediately imposing a fine.

What do you think about the amount of traffic fines in the Netherlands? For example, do you think the fines are too high or do you think that certain violations should be punished more heavily?
