Buying a used car: the test drive
Have you set your sights on a second-hand car? Then of course you want to take a test drive first. That is the only way to find out whether the used car functions properly. But what should you actually think about and pay attention to when taking a test drive? We will list it for you.
Before the test drive
Before you actually get behind the wheel, you want to know if the car has a valid MOT and is insured. Also check if the registration certificate is in order and that the correct license plates are on the car.
The seller in turn wants to see if you are in possession of a valid driver's license. By filling out a test drive form in duplicate with the seller, you indicate that you have the car on loan and that you are liable for any damage and traffic fines during the test drive. Note that filling out a test drive declaration mainly has advantages for the seller, but that without this declaration the seller will probably not agree to the test drive.
During the test drive
Once behind the wheel, turn the key. Do all the indicator lights work and does the dashboard lighting work? Also test whether the spare keys work. Does the engine start without hesitation? Time to drive away. Does the clutch work properly, that is, not too heavy or not too light? A 'soft' clutch can indicate worn clutch plates. Does the gear lever not vibrate and does the car shift smoothly, without squeaking or cracking?
It is also important to pay attention to the acceleration. Does the car accelerate normally? If there is an uneven distribution of power when pulling away, this can indicate dirty inlet and exhaust valves in injection engines.
During the test drive, drive on as many different types of roads and road surfaces as possible. Straight roads, winding roads, bumpy roads. Pay attention to the car's handling. Does the car track straight ahead and does it not pull to the left or right when braking? Does the braking go smoothly, without vibrations?
During the test drive, don't forget to check if the air conditioning and heating are working. Also take a look at the speedometer and odometer. Finally, on a sloping road, test the handbrake.
We realize that, especially for a layman, there are a lot of things you need to pay attention to during a test drive. You can save yourself this trouble by having a purchase inspection carried out in a professional garage. A test drive by a mechanic is a standard part of the inspection, which is much more extensive than an MOT inspection and tells you everything about the technical condition of the car. This way you know for sure that you are buying a good used car.
