A day out to Valkenburg aan de Geul? Great! There is plenty to see and do. From a brisk walk to wonderful relaxation.

1. The Geuldal

In the area around Valkenburg a/d Geul you can take beautiful walks. For example, walk from Kasteel Oost along the Geul towards Schin op Geul. At the statue group the Three Statues, make a 180 degree turn onto the Schaelsberg, towards the vault. Walk past the vault on the left, bend to the right and you will enjoy perhaps the most spectacular view that South Limburg has to offer!

2. The city center

The tourist centre of Valkenburg aan de Geul is full of cosy hotels, restaurants and cafés. On the many terraces, which are packed in high season, it is a place to see and be seen. Some restaurants that we can heartily recommend are Latinos in the Grotestraat, Il Forno and Steakhouse Valkenhof in the Berkelstraat, and Sushi & Grill Kodoo in the Plenkertstraat, at the bottom of the Cauberg. As for cafés, we recommend Pub Henry VIII, Café 't Hoekje and (special) beer café De Grendelpoort. Next to De Grendelpoort you will also find Bierboetiek De Zythotheek. A real must for the (special) beer lover!

3. The casino

Play your games! In addition to roulette, you can also play Holland Casino on top of the Cauberg of course also play blackjack or poker. Or take a chance on the slot machines. There is also a restaurant and there are various attractive packages for a fun night out! Do you gamble wisely?

4. Thermae 2000

On top of the Cauberg, near the casino, you will find the wellness center Thermae 2000. Here you can relax for a wonderful day or several days. There is also a hotel. The spa is filled with water from springs that has been filtered through the lime-rich Limburg soil for thousands of years. Thermae 2000 has various types of saunas (Swedish, Finnish, etc.) – nine in total – and two steam baths.

5. The castle ruins

De castle ruins – the ruins of Valkenburg Castle – are definitely worth a visit, as are the Fluweelgrotten below, a system of tunnels created by marl extraction. The castle was largely destroyed in the Middle Ages and at the beginning of the Dutch War. It is now unthinkable, but after a devastating city fire at the end of the 18th century, the marl blocks of the ruin were used to rebuild the houses. The ruin was restored in the beginning and middle of the previous century.

6. The Cauberg

It is probably the most famous Dutch mountain – hill actually – certainly among cycling tourists: the Cauberg. With a gradient of 5 to 8 percent, it is certainly not the most difficult climb in the area. But the slope has been the final part of important cycling competitions on several occasions, such as world championships, Tour stages and the cycling classic Amstel Gold Race. That is why every cycling tourist must have climbed the Cauberg. No bike? Even on foot, this mountain is a real calf biter! The Cauberg also has a dark side. In 1954, the brakes of a bus full of Belgian tourists failed, resulting in 19 deaths and many injuries.

7. The Wilhelmina Tower

The Wilhelminatoren is a lookout tower, built in the early 20th century. The large illuminated cross on top of the tower can be seen from a great distance in the dark. The tower offers a beautiful view of Valkenburg and part of the rest of the Heuvelland. Daredevils can zipline from the tower. The best way to reach the tower is via the cable car. There is plenty to do on top of the mountain, such as tobogganing, midget golf and more.

8. Amusement park De Valkenier

Theme park De Valkenier is the oldest amusement park in the Netherlands and profiles itself as the cheapest amusement park in Europe. Attractions such as the roller coaster, moon rocket and the haunted house evoke feelings of nostalgia among several generations of Valkenburg, Limburg and tourists. Not so long ago, the park was extensively renovated and many new attractions were added, making the park completely up to date!

9. Fairytale forest

Not only the Efteling, but also Valkenburg aan de Geul has its own Fairytale forest. The park, at the foot of the Heunsberg, has more than forty larger and smaller attractions. Hansel and Gretel, Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White, Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Rumpelstiltskin: they all pass by! The entrance fee is not too expensive at 7,50 per person (from 3 years; children under 3 years free entrance).

How about a ride to Walem and from there through the field to the ancient Hermitage. After the parking lot only 200 meters walk.
