Moving – how much does a professional moving company cost?

You are moving and are faced with a choice: move yourself or hire a professional mover, who will do all the heavy lifting for you. But how much does a moving company actually cost?

Call-out charges

It is important to choose a moving company that is located near you. A moving company will charge call-out fees from a certain distance, based on the number of kilometers to your front door. These call-out fees vary greatly per moving company and can amount to one euro per kilometer. So make sure you are well informed in advance!

Man-hours

You can have a moving company dismantle all your furniture and pack your belongings. You can also do this yourself, and just leave the towing and loading and unloading of the moving truck to the movers.

A moving team usually consists of two to three people. That is to say the driver plus one or two extra movers, who cost an average of 30 euros per hour. More movers therefore cost more money, but often a move is faster and more efficient, which means you end up cheaper.

Transportation

Finally, you also pay for the moving transport itself. A small moving van will easily cost 60 euros per hour, including the driver. This also applies to loading and unloading.

Other costs

Many moving companies charge extra for weekend moves. Moving on weekends is easily one and a half times more expensive than moving during the week, so preferably do not move on a Saturday or Sunday if you want to save money.

It is difficult to say exactly how much a moving company costs. After all, every move is different. The amount of stuff to be moved plays a role, the accessibility of your home, the distance between your current and new place of residence, etc. Keep in mind that a move by a moving company can easily cost 1000 euros.

The fact is that moving yourself is almost always cheaper than hiring a professional moving company. With some help from friends and family, your costs are often limited to renting a van, which serves as a moving truck.
