Traffic signs: a signpost
Besides traffic signs and lights, traffic signs on the road are our most important road signs. But what do all those lines and arrows actually mean?
Stripes
In principle, there are two types of lines: solid lines and broken lines. These lines separate roads or halves of roads from each other. You may not cross a single or double solid line. If there is a broken line on 'your' side of the solid line, you may cross it. You may also cross the edge of the hard shoulder.
Also, expulsion areas, consisting of diagonal stripes or filled, are considered stripes. Exceeding them is prohibited and can result in a fine of 230 euros: the same as for passing a solid line.
The green filling between two center lines – either continuous or broken – means that you are allowed to drive 100 km/h on that road. Is that filling missing? Then you are allowed to drive 80 km/h. Is there no center line at all? Then the maximum speed is 60 km/h.
Arrows
Arrows simply indicate a (mandatory) direction of travel before a junction or roundabout. If you do not follow the mandatory direction of travel, for example by 'incorrectly' sorting? Then you can end up with a fine of 230 euros.
Shark teeth
Shark teeth 'force' you to stop and give way to drivers on the intersecting road or roundabout. Failure to give way can cost you 230 euros.
Pedestrian crossing
A zebra crossing is also a sign on the road. It means that you must give priority to pedestrians and disabled vehicles that (want to) cross here. Driving through can earn you a hefty fine of 370 euros.
Bicycle lanes and bus lanes
Bicycle lanes and bus lanes are also marked on the road. Only the designated target group may be on these. Are you a driver of a car on a bus lane, for example? Then you can get a fine of 140 euros. Waste of your money.
