In this blog we will go deeper into the most important aspects regarding sticking this vignette.
Why do you need to put a vignette in Switzerland?
A vignette is proof that you have paid road tax for your vehicle. The vignette is mandatory in Switzerland for all vehicles up to a maximum of 3500 kg. You must also purchase a vignette for your trailer or caravan in Switzerland. On all national motorways it is mandatory to be in possession of a valid vignette certificate. These are valid for one calendar year upon purchase. You can obtain a vignette certificate in both the Netherlands and Switzerland itself. In the Netherlands, these are available from the ANWB, for example. It must be possible to demonstrate at all times that it is a genuine vignette and that is why it is important to keep your proof of purchase. In Switzerland, you can obtain them at the border, post offices and petrol stations, among other places.
What happens if you have not affixed a vignette?
In addition to the fact that it is mandatory to purchase a vignette, you also have to stick it on correctly. If this is not the case, you can still get a fine. Customs does this to prevent the resale of vignettes or fraud. In addition to getting a fine of approximately 200 CHF, which is approximately €194, you also have to buy a new vignette. If for some reason you suffer window damage, which damages your vignette, you can report this to the insurance company or the Swiss customs. You will then receive a new vignette certificate.
