The history of hatchback cars
The hatchback has been around since 1938. The French brand Citroën had the scoop with its 11CV Commerciale. However, the tailgate had two parts. The French car brand Renault was the first to mass-produce the hatchback from 1961 to 1986. The cars were mainly used as a city car or family car, but in later stages the luxury and more expensive car brands also with a hatchback, like BMW and Porsche.
What are the advantages of a hatchback?
What is the advantage of a hatchback car? A big advantage is that you can fold down the back seats, which creates extra space for luggage. However, due to their compactness, hatchbacks are lightweight. This has its own advantages. This saves on road tax. In addition, parts wear out less quickly and these cars consume much less fuel. Finally, hatchback cars are generally cheaper than larger cars.
What's better: a sedan or a hatchback?
There is an important difference between the sedan and the hatchback car. The sedan has a larger luggage space than the hatchback, with the trunk also being clearly separated from the rest of the car. The advantage of this is that no heat or coolness is lost every time the trunk is opened. In addition, sedans have more legroom for the back seats. The sedan is therefore also longer and heavier in weight.
Difference between hatchback and station wagon
A hatchback does have some similarities with a station wagon. The big difference is that a station wagon is longer and therefore offers more space. Because the hatchback is smaller in size, it is also of a lighter weight class.

Is a liftback the same as a hatchback?
A liftback combines the convenience of a hatchback with the lines of a sedan. The liftback is also a compact vehicle, with a roof that does not slope as sharply as other models. It does have the tailgate as a third or fifth door, which allows you to create extra luggage space. Well-known liftbacks are the Audi S5 Sportback or Tesla S P85D.
