'Just' ten fun facts and trivia about cars and driving!

Did you know that…?

In principle, you don't need to have a warning triangle in your car in the Netherlands? It is mandatory to warn approaching drivers in time if your stationary car forms an obstacle. But you can also do this with your hazard lights. Are they not working? Then a warning triangle is in fact mandatory.

If you live in the Netherlands, are you allowed to have a car with a foreign license plate? The car must be registered in the Netherlands. Furthermore, you are liable for 'normal' bpm and motor vehicle tax here. For short-term use, you can be exempted from this.

Are the green license plates that you see every now and then so-called dealer license plates? Probably someone is taking the car for a test drive.

Are certain letter combinations on license plates undesirable? For example, SS (Schutzstaffel, the infamous paramilitary organization of the Nazis), abbreviations of political parties or of organizations such as KKK or NSB.

A car that was first registered in the Netherlands before January 1, 1960 does not have an MOT obligation?

In addition to safety, environmental aspects are also taken into account during the MOT inspection? This is how the emission of exhaust gases is measured. If a car emits more gases than the law allows, you will be rejected.

Car damage caused by a poor road surface can possibly be recovered from the road manager – usually the municipality, province or Rijkswaterstaat? Your claim for damages has a chance of success if the condition of the road surface has been poor for a long time and could in fact have been repaired long ago.

Do you need to transport children up to 1,35 metres in an approved car seat? Which car seat is suitable for your child depends on factors such as the age, height and weight of the child.

If you are not going on holiday with your camper for a long time, it is better to have the registration number suspended? You then pay no motor vehicle tax during the time that you do not use the camper and you do not have to insure the vehicle. The vehicle also does not have to be MOT tested.

If you make changes to your vehicle, you may need to inform the RDW? For example, if you have the car sprayed in a different colour, have your car chip-tuned or have a different exhaust fitted. An additional inspection may be required. You must pay for the (re)inspection yourself.
