It never seems to happen at the right time: you have a car that you use a lot (or a little). Just when you need to leave for an important appointment, it won't start. Here's a bit of first aid if your car won't start.<\/span><\/p>\n

The car won't start: the battery?<\/b><\/h2>\n

This could have several causes: a faulty spark plug, a flat battery? We'll start at the beginning. If the car doesn't respond at all when you try to start it, check if any warning lights are illuminated on your dashboard. If not, it means the battery is flat.<\/span><\/p>\n

But is this a cause or an effect? In this case, you can have the car by a friend or neighbour <\/span>jump-start with jump leads<\/span><\/a>. Check if you have left a power consumer on (e.g. the lights). If this is not the case, it is advisable to have the battery tested at a garage. An old battery often gives up when it starts to get colder. And if the dynamo light then comes on while driving, you will immediately be aware of the problem: the battery is no longer being recharged.<\/span><\/p>\n

The battery is working just fine<\/b><\/h2>\n

If the battery isn't the problem, and there is enough power, but nothing happens, then it's possible your starter motor has given up the ghost. Usually, you'll only hear a click when you try to start it. That's the relay, and it means the starter motor is faulty. You can buy a new or reconditioned starter motor at a garage. In the latter case, you can leave your old starter motor and usually receive a discount, or you can go to the nearest car scrapyard. They usually have something in stock (unless you have a very rare car).<\/span><\/p>\n

If the starter motor works but the engine doesn't start, it could be that a spark plug is faulty, but the engine should have been running poorly beforehand as well. It could also be that the engine is not getting any fuel. This is easy to determine. On top of your tank is the fuel pump (at the back of the car) and when you turn the ignition on, you can hear the fuel pump humming from the back seat. If this is the case, the fuel pump is not defective and the cause lies elsewhere. Also check the air filter; it might be blocked by pests or something similar. Check the spark plug leads, there could be cracks in them causing the spark plug to not ignite. Or check the fuel hose, it could also have cracks from drying out. In this case, there will be a strong smell of petrol or diesel in and around the car.<\/span><\/p>\n

The car still won't start<\/b><\/h2>\n

Because most cars are so advanced with sensors, meters, and computers, and all the electronics that are in a car nowadays, it is advisable to tow the car to a garage or have it towed. Every garage nowadays has a computer with which they can read your car. Based on their findings, you can then still decide whether to have the repair carried out or to do it yourself. Then you only have to pay for the cost of towing and reading the car.<\/span><\/p>\n
