You have a lot to sort out, especially if your car can no longer be driven. A quick guide to car damage:

Collision with another car

Collision with an object

Collision with stray animals

Brand

Storm damage

Collision with another car

Have you had a collision with another car? Is the other party at fault? Then damage to your car will be reimbursed by the other party's third-party liability insurance. For this, you need to send the claim form to your insurance company. Your insurance company will hold the other party liable and ensure that you receive compensation for the damage. The other party's insurance company will appoint an expert to assess the damage to your car. Based on this assessment, the damage to your car will be reimbursed. Watch outYou are not obligated to have the damage repaired by the company that carried out the inspection. You can also opt to receive the damage amount and find your own repairer who can fix your car (hopefully for a lower cost).,

If you are at fault for the collision, your third-party liability car insurance will cover the damage to the other party's car. Damage to your own car is only covered if you have comprehensive car insurance (all-risk).

Collision with an object

Are you bumping into a bollard or a lamppost? If the damage is your own fault, and cannot be claimed from another party, then the damage to your own car will only be covered if you have comprehensive insurance. The damage to the lamppost, for example, will be paid for by your third-party liability insurance.

Collision with stray animals

With limited casco insurance (sometimes also called WA plus) or with all-risk insurance, this damage will be reimbursed. Please contact your insurance company in this regard. Damage caused by free-roaming animals usually has no consequences for your no-claim discount. However, you may have to pay an excess if it is included in your policy terms.

Brand

If you are dealing with a car fire, there's a good chance you won't be able to use the car afterwards. Once a car catches fire, everything usually goes with it. But who is going to pay for that? In the event of a fire, it also depends on how you are insured. If you are only WA insured, you will unfortunately have to pay for it yourself. However, if you are WA plus or fully comprehensive insured, the insurance company will pay out (after an investigation).

Storm damage

Has your car suffered storm damage, for example from a fallen branch? If you have a car insurance policy with limited or comprehensive cover, storm damage (wind force 7 or higher) will be reimbursed. You are not at fault for storm damage. With most car insurers, claiming storm damage therefore has no consequences for your no-claim discount. However, you may have to pay an excess if this applies to your car insurance policy.

Types of insurance

You'll already notice that the type of insurance you have makes quite a difference. I'll list the 3 options that most car insurers in the Netherlands offer:

WA insuranceis compulsory for every car. This insurance only covers damage that you cause to other vehicles or objects. Damage to your own car is therefore not covered.

WA plus/limited hullExtra insurance that covers fire, theft, and windscreen damage to your car, in addition to the compulsory third-party liability cover. This insurance is more expensive than compulsory third-party liability cover alone.

Full hull/all-riskan insurance policy that covers all damage, including damage for which you are at fault. This includes damage to your own car as well as to other cars or other objects. Therefore, this is also the most expensive insurance.

Het is altijd een gedoe als er schade komt aan je auto.
