It recently became known that self-driving cars will soon be allowed on the road without a driver. Currently, it is still mandatory for someone to have their hands on the steering wheel. So don't be surprised if you soon see a car driving past without anyone in the driver's seat.<\/b><\/p>\n
In the United States last year, a man still died when he crashed his (partially) self-driving Tesla Model S, which was on autopilot. In the Netherlands too, there was recently a fatal accident with a Tesla, but that was \u2013 according to the manufacturer at least \u2013 due to the driver themselves, who was driving far too fast. The autopilot was switched off in this case.<\/span><\/p>\n It'll still be a while before there are more cars driving around without than with a driver, as the fully self-driving car is still experimental. For example, at the beginning of this year, albeit still with someone behind the wheel, about fifty self-driving cars drove on the A2 motorway from Amsterdam to Beesd and back. \u2018Just\u2019 among the other traffic. And that went fine. A test in Friesland with a self-driving van was less successful and forced some cyclists into the verge.<\/span><\/p>\n The technology that allows cars to drive themselves is becoming increasingly intelligent. The cause of most accidents is, after all, human error. A moment of inattention and braking too late, and \u2018bang\u2019. Should the self-driving car's system fail, you can always intervene yourself. Therefore, you have no excuse to use your commute to work to answer your emails. <\/span><\/p>\n Self-driving cars will almost certainly be able to communicate with each other, with traffic lights, and with your navigation system. Think of the Internet of Things. Automatic braking, stopping at red lights, adjusting your route in case of traffic congestion: all things that will ensure smoother traffic flow in addition to increased safety. <\/span><\/p>\n We can actually only think of one disadvantage associated with self-driving cars. We enjoy driving ourselves so much!
