He soon received a reply.<\/p>\n

\u201cShall I call to go and have a look?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cGo ahead! I'm just not free this evening. Can you make an appointment before Wednesday?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Hans thought: Wednesday? I really don't want to wait that long. I want that car! What if someone gets there before me and snaps it up right under my nose.<\/p>\n

As he ponders what to do, his phone beeps again.<\/p>\n

Vera.<\/p>\n

And a link.<\/p>\n

With an advertisement.<\/p>\n

It's an advertisement from a travel agency. A round trip for 2 people through South America. For 6 weeks! Hans is hesitating. Well, a round trip through South America is something he's always wanted to do. A Once-in-a-lifetime experience<\/em>. What should they choose?<\/p>\n

The phone's beeping again.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe're not done yet with buying the car. It needs to be insured. Road tax. Maintenance and repairs. Parking, etc.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Vera had a point. They could easily afford the purchase; they had saved up for it. But then what? Applying for a parking permit, insuring it. The occasional trip to the garage. Winter tyres. Phew, besides the 6000 euros for the car, you have to add quite a bit more.<\/p>\n

And do they actually need the car? They live in the city centre, with the train station nearby. Taking a train is no problem. And if they go away for the weekend, you can borrow or rent a car.<\/p>\n

Just a few headlines from recent years. There seemed to be a trend from 2010 onwards that fewer and fewer young people were buying their own car. Logical perhaps: since the crisis, young people have had less security and less money to spend. Trendwatchers quickly concluded that car sharing was on the rise. But since 2014, car ownership among young people has actually been increasing again. What trend can you identify here?<\/p>\n

A matter of money<\/h2>\n

It stands to reason that fewer cars are sold to young people if they have less disposable income. If you ask young people why they don't have a car, the most common answer is that they don't have the money for it. Only 6% of young people surveyed in Belgium believe that there are already too many cars on the road. You can read this in an article from Ethias: Young people don't leave their cars for environmental reasons<\/a>. Not having a car is usually just a matter of money.<\/p>\n

Car ownership in large cities has fallen<\/h2>\n

Car ownership among young people has actually increased again in recent years, and is now at an all-time high. But that's an average. In the four major cities in the Netherlands, car ownership among young people has indeed fallen slightly. This is particularly noticeable among highly educated individuals, who are more likely to opt for car hire when they need one. Furthermore, highly educated young people seem to prefer spending their money on travel rather than on a fancy car parked outside their home. Abroad<\/h2>\n

The figures in the Netherlands also differ from those abroad. In Germany and the US, a trend is visible where young people are purchasing cars less quickly. I read an interesting article last weekend:<\/p>\n
