When Elly and I in 1998 Adrem Car Rental has started<\/a> In Maastricht, we only had 2 cars to rent. Banks, after all, don't queue up to finance a handful of vehicles for you when you're just starting out with a car rental company\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n

Before long, we regularly had too few cars to rent out. And disappointing customers is, of course, the last thing you want when you've just started a business. So, why not rent out your own car?<\/p>\n

Old Golf<\/h2>\n

We used to drive a private old 1983 Golf diesel automatic. If our two cars were rented out, and someone called us for another car, I would just offer them that one. We couldn't go anywhere anyway.<\/p>\n

I was honest and said the Golf was an old car and that I was perfectly happy for the customer to look elsewhere for a rental company. But to my surprise, our old Golf was regularly used by customers who found it quite amusing to drive in such an old Golf.<\/p>\n

In fact, one customer drove it around for weeks \u2013 he found it a lovely car.<\/p>\n

Priest from Brazil<\/h2>\n

Around 2001, we had a visit from a friendly gentleman. He told us that he was a priest in Brazil, and that he was in the Netherlands for 2 months. If he had been on leave in the Netherlands before, a garage would lend him an old car for a small amount to get around. However, that garage no longer existed.<\/p>\n

He asked me if we could do something similar for him.<\/p>\n

We had already rented out all of our regular hire cars. They would have been too expensive for him anyway.<\/p>\n

Ik had nog wel een oude Eend staan. Die had ik gekocht met de bedoeling om er een open sportauto van te bouwen, een Le Patron. Daar was ik toen alleen nog niet aan toegekomen. (Dat is er later w\u00e9l van gekomen \u2014 dat verhaal staat in Ga toch een hobby zoeken<\/a>. Klassiekers en oldtimers verhuren wij niet meer.)<\/p>\n

De Eend was niet meer in een beste staat, want ik zou de carrosserie er toch afhalen en weggooien. Maar de pater vond het eigenlijk wel een goed idee om 2 maanden in die Eend rond te rijden. In Brazili\u00eb had hij niet eens een auto.<\/p>\n

Perhaps you saw him driving between Maastricht and Tongeren then \u2013 he had to go there every day. I remember that TV Maastricht interviewed him at the time. Fortunately, the priest didn't mention that he was driving a car from Adrem...<\/p>\n

Tailgate gone<\/h2>\n

Iets later kwam ik aan een oude Citro\u00ebn AX, misschien ken je het model nog. Bij die auto zat het onderste deel van de achterklep vast aan de achterruit \u2014 een leuk idee van Citro\u00ebn, zoals zal blijken. Ik had die auto ingeruild bij de verkoop van een ex-huurauto.<\/p>\n

I was called. To see if we had a car available for this evening.<\/p>\n

And lo and behold: we had too few hire cars again.<\/p>\n

And again I said honestly: it is an old pastry, but you can rent it from me.<\/p>\n

The next day the tenant returned.<\/p>\n

He was deeply ashamed.<\/p>\n

De auto had geen achterklep meer. De huurder had na het boodschappen doen de achterklep een beetje te hard dichtgegooid. Het raam viel in duizenden stukjes uit elkaar, en de rest van de achterklep lag op de parkeerplaats.<\/p>\n

Car sharing<\/h2>\n

For us, it wasn't difficult to share our cars with other people. They were cheap little cars, and we don't have much of an attachment to our cars anyway \u2013 we preferred to rent them out as often as possible. I find it fascinating to see that car sharing is now on the rise.<\/p>\n

Zou jij je eigen auto durven delen met een vreemde? Ik was er destijds niet zo moeilijk over, maar ik snap het als je aarzelt.<\/p>\n

En heb je gewoon een auto nodig zonder dat je die van jezelf hoeft uit te lenen: dat kan bij ons<\/a>, in Maastricht, Heerlen, Sittard en Roermond.<\/p>\n
