Your child can be transported safely using a child car seat. Until what age do you need such a car seat? In the Netherlands, it's not so much about age, but about your child's height. Up to a height of 135 centimetres, your child must sit in a child car seat or a booster seat. In this article, we will delve deeper into the regulations concerning car seats, looking at until what age, height, and weight a child seat is required.

Until what age does your child need to remain in a car seat? In the Netherlands, there is no specific age at which car seats are compulsory. Consideration is given to your child's height. Children shorter than 1.35 metres must be placed in a child car seat. Depending on the weight and height, you must choose a baby seat, child seat, or booster seat. If your child is already taller than 1.35 metres, they may sit on the back seat without a child seat. They must, however, wear a seatbelt. This is how you can transport your children safely on your next family outing through South Limburg, holiday or road trip.

Een kinderautostoel is niet verplicht wanneer een kind:

* Ouder is dan 12 jaar.
* Langer is dan 1,35 meter.

Dit geldt voor alle zitplaatsen in de auto.

There is an exception to this rule. In many cars fit three child car seats you can only fit two car seats. If you have a third child who is shorter than 1.35 metres, they may sit on the back seat between the two car seats. This applies to a child aged three and over, and only if the child can wear a seatbelt. In exceptional cases, a child aged three and over may be transported with just a seatbelt when they are being transported by someone other than their parents. However, this only applies for short distances, for example picking them up from school or transporting them to Children's party. Furthermore, the child must sit in the back seat. When someone else regularly drives your child around, it is no longer an incidental event and the usual rules apply.

Which car seat is needed up to what age?

The i-Size standard encompasses the regulations concerning car seats and this rule has only been active since 2013. A few key points of these regulations are:

An infant up to fifteen months old must be transported facing the rear.

The car seats are classified by height and no longer by weight.

Car seats with ISOFIX anchoring points may only be used from now on.

Based on these points, a baby up to fifteen months old and up to 83 centimetres tall must be transported facing rearwards, and can be seated in an infant car seat group 0/0+ (0-13 kg according to the old standard). From 15 months old and with a height between 60 and 105 centimetres, your child may also be transported facing forwards. This was, according to the old standard, car seat group 1 for a weight between nine and eighteen kilograms. From 3 to 12 years old and with a height between 105 and 135 centimetres, your child may be transported facing forwards. This was previously car seat group 2 and 3 for a weight between 15 and 36 kilograms.

When are booster seats compulsory?

A booster seat is a child seat, but differs from a normal car seat. With a booster seat, you secure your child using the car's seat belt, whereas a car seat has its own harness system to hold your child. Booster seats can be bought with or without a backrest. Whether you can use a booster seat is not dependent on age. The length and weight of your child determine if a booster seat can be used. Children weighing over 22 kilograms and taller than 1.25 metres may use a booster seat. A booster seat is also mandatory for children under 1.35 metres, so from 1.25 metres to 1.35 metres, a child must sit on a booster seat.

How should you transport a child in a car?

The i-Size standard dictates that children must travel rearward-facing up to 15 months. Why is this? In the event of a car accident, this is many times safer. In a head-on collision, travelling rearward-facing prevents your child's neck from having to withstand significant G-forces. These forces are now absorbed by the entire body, significantly reducing the chance of serious injury. If you use a safe car seat, you may transport your child both in the back and the front of the car. For safety, this makes little difference. Do be sure to deactivate the airbag on the passenger seat. The impact caused by the airbag in an accident can severely injure your child.

What about seat belts?

Generally speaking, you are not allowed to transport people if you do not have seat belts. Furthermore, everyone must wear their own seat belt, which means that no more people can be transported than there are seat belts available. Two children in one seat belt is also not permitted. Everyone must also have their own seat in the car. Therefore, no one is allowed to sit on another person's lap.

Het is ontzettend belangrijk voor de veiligheid van je kind dat je hem of haar op de juiste manier vervoert in je auto.
