If so, please be aware that you will need an environmental sticker in an increasing number of cities.

Environmental zones: which cities?

In the cities of Paris, Lyon, Lille and Grenoble, you already need an environmental sticker. In cities like Bordeaux, Cannes, Montpellier and Toulouse, environmental zones are very likely to be introduced in the short term.

Permanent and temporary environmental zones

You essentially have two types of environmental zones. Firstly, a permanent environmental zone, such as in the centre of Paris. This environmental zone is generally in effect year-round, but outside of specific times, you can still gain access without an environmental sticker. Secondly, there are also temporary environmental zones, which are introduced during extended periods of extreme pollution.

Types of environmental stickers

In both permanent and temporary environmental zones, you need a (valid) environmental sticker: the so-called Crit'Air vignette. There are six types of stickers: green, purple, yellow, orange, red and grey. The sticker you need depends on the type, age and CO2 emissions of your vehicle. The cleanest vehicles will receive a green sticker, the most polluting will not receive a sticker at all. This means you will not have access to an environmental zone. The only exception to this applies to people who possess a European disabled persons' parking card.

Penalties for infringement

Even with a foreign number plate – in other words, if you're a tourist – you need an environmental sticker. If you don't have a valid environmental sticker, you risk a fine. This also applies if you've affixed the environmental sticker incorrectly or if it's unreadable. Fines can range from 45 euros (if paid immediately) to 450 euros, plus an immediate driving ban.

Order environmental sticker

Are you travelling to France? Then order your environmental sticker in good time, as delivery takes four to six weeks. The environmental sticker is Only available online. You will then pay €4.80 including shipping costs to the Netherlands. You only need to purchase these once per vehicle. Please note: you will need a credit card for payment. If you order the sticker via another website, you run the risk of paying (much) more! Stick the environmental sticker on the bottom right inside of your windscreen.

Is your French not so good (anymore)? You can also order the French environmental sticker online from this Dutch-language website: vignette ordering

website van de Franse overheid. ANWB website.
