Besides traffic signs and lights, road markings are our main guides on the road. But what do all those lines and arrows actually mean?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Stripes<\/h2>\n

In principle, there are two types of lines: solid lines and broken lines. These lines separate roads or parts of roads from each other. You are not allowed to cross a single or double solid line. If there is a broken line on \u2018your\u2019 side of the solid line, you may cross it. You may also cross the edge of a\n\n\n\n\n.<\/p>\n

Overhang zones, consisting of diagonal stripes or being filled in, are also considered to be stripes. Crossing them is forbidden and could result in a fine of 230 euros: the same amount as for crossing a solid white line.<\/p>\n

The green stripe between two centre lines \u2013 whether solid or broken \u2013 means that the speed limit on that road is 100 km\/h. If that stripe is missing? Then you are allowed to drive at 80 km\/h. If there is no centre line at all? Then the maximum speed is 60 km\/h.<\/p>\n

Arrows<\/h2>\n

Arrows simply indicate a (mandatory) direction of travel before an intersection or roundabout. If you do not follow the mandatory direction of travel, for example by choosing the \u2018wrong\u2019 lane? Then you could face a fine of 230 euros.<\/p>\n

Shark teeth<\/h2>\n

Shark's teeth\u2018 \u2019force' you to stop and give way to drivers on the intersecting road or roundabout. Failure to give way can cost you 230 euros.<\/p>\n

Zebrapad<\/h2>\n

A zebra crossing is also a road marking. It means you must give way to pedestrians and disabled vehicles who are (intending to) cross here. Driving on could land you a hefty fine of 370 euros.<\/p>\n

Cycle lanes and bus lanes<\/h2>\n

Cycle lanes and bus lanes are also marked on the road. Only the designated target group is allowed on them. If you are driving a car on a bus lane, for example, you can be fined 140 euros. A waste of money.<\/p>\n
