No fewer than 200 speed cameras are being fitted with these so-called ANPR cameras. Should you be worried about this? That depends.<\/strong><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>With ANPR, which stands for automatic number plate recognition, your licence plate is automatically scanned. It is then checked whether the vehicle owner has any outstanding fines or is a fugitive. If that is not the case, the data is deleted again. For now, at least...<\/p>\n<p>There is a law in the making that would allow the data of law-abiding drivers to be stored for four weeks as well. If a crime is committed with the car during the retention period, the police can trace the car's movements.<\/p>\n<p>At present, data is only stored in the event of a 'hit' or when it is needed for investigation purposes. In the latter case, permission is required from the Public Prosecution Service.<\/p>\n<p>If you have no outstanding fines, have not committed a serious offence, or do not plan to, you have nothing to worry about in principle with the new law. However, if you value your privacy highly or are distrustful of the government, this is a worrying development.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em>What do you think about licence plate registration and data storage?
