The holiday season is just around the corner. At high temperatures and during long drives, the danger of an overheating engine lurks. Especially if you are also driving in the mountains and with a caravan in tow.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Keep an eye on the temperature<\/h2>\n

How can you prevent an engine from overheating? And what can you do yourself if your engine has overheated? To prevent an engine from overheating, it is important to keep a close eye on the temperature gauge on your dashboard. If the needle is flirting with red, you need to be careful.<\/p>\n

Change down a gear<\/h2>\n

In challenging conditions, it's important to make the most of your car's power. While it's good for your fuel consumption in normal conditions to change up gears a bit earlier, when you're in the mountains with a caravan in tow, it's better to rev the engine a bit more.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s perfectly fine for your engine to \u2018roar\u2019 a bit in tough conditions. That\u2019s better than shifting up too early and barely making progress, which causes your car to use more fuel and overheat (indicated on your temperature gauge).<\/p>\n

Heating on, air conditioning off<\/h2>\n

To save your engine further, it's best to set the heating and fan to the highest setting. The engine can then dissipate heat more easily. Switch off the radio, air conditioning, lights (if possible), and other power consumers.<\/p>\n

Is your engine at risk of overheating despite all these measures? Then there's nothing else for it but to switch off the engine and open the bonnet. Don't wait until white smoke starts coming out from under your bonnet. That doesn't mean a new pope has been elected.<\/p>\n

Leave your radiator alone<\/h2>\n

Resist the temptation to unscrew the radiator cap. This can lead to explosive situations, potentially causing severe burns!<\/p>\n

After about fifteen minutes, check if the engine has cooled down sufficiently by starting the car and looking at your temperature gauge. You might need to top up the radiator with coolant or \u2013 in emergencies only! \u2013 tap water.
