It's Sunday afternoon, around 4:00 PM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I'm being called on Adrem's emergency number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A customer who rented one of our new electric Hyundai Ioniqs this weekend is stranded at Maastricht Aachen Airport. The car's navigation system indicates that there should be a charging station. However, where a charging station is shown on screen, there is no charging station to be found in the real world. And the car shows that there is only 5 km of charge left. That's not enough to drive to Maastricht\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m quickly searching the internet for charging points at or on the airport. Fortunately, there should be a few more charging stations nearby. I\u2019ll provide the potential addresses that are within 5 km.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And this tenant was so enthusiastic about electric driving!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He thought it was great to try out a new electric car for a change. Equipped with all the latest technical gadgets. Lane assist, adaptive cruise control, intelligent autopilot, nice! The first steps towards self-driving cars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He only had to go to Eindhoven. That's 180 km there and back, so perfectly doable within the 311 km that Hyundai indicates. That should be the range according to the new European WLTP standard for this car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our tenant has been to and from Eindhoven. He left with a full battery and drove 160 km in the car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was stranded on the way back at Maastricht Aachen Airport, still only 10 km from Maastricht.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fortunately, our tenant is finding a suitable charging station. Quickly charge the car, and the last stretch to Maastricht will be done in no time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oh no, this is taking a while to load.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do you know how long?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2 hours!!!!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The tenant had to wait this long to be able to drive the last 10 km...<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What do you think? Would this gentleman want to rent an electric car again?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And with him many others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For six months, we had two brand-new electric Hyundai Ioniqs. From September 2019 up to and including February of this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are still on our website<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was always the last cars left when all the other cars had already been rented out. We barely managed to rent these cars out. No interest!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They have been rented out at times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To the brave trendsetters of today. Most people were also quite content. But they didn't have to wait 2 hours to charge for the last 10 km.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With a load factor of less than 10%, they were major money-losers. (Most of our cars achieve a load factor of 70% or more).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With a huge kick up their clean electric backsides, these cars have thankfully been returned to the leasing company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So if you're a huge idealist, then definitely book an electric car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You will then receive a friendly email back stating that this car is temporarily unavailable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fortunately, there are still enough alternatives<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don't tell anyone, mind!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
