We are camping on Terschelling in a tent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Not such a luxurious, furnished tent, but one you have to put up yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Naturally, without reading the manual, my children don't do that either. The internet and YouTube are everywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Luckily, there are only two other tents on the field, and they're quite far away too. No one to laugh at me. Something I really enjoy doing at a campsite myself: watching others struggle to set up their newly purchased tent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Of course you get it wrong the first time. Otherwise you won't learn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The poles are through the tunnels, now just the pegs into the ground. But wait a minute. I take a few steps back, and I see the tent looks ridiculous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The bit where you should normally be able to stand is only 1 metre 20 high.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
So that long stick should have gone through the other tunnel after all. OK, I'll remember that for next time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Not long after, the tent is up. It looks pretty normal, for a first go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Beds, sleeping bags, bring the cooking mess inside, unfold the tables and chairs and place them outside, and enjoy the well-deserved cold beer from the cool box.<\/p>\n\n\n
We bought the cool box a few years ago in a Carrefour in France.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Inside Carrefour it was wonderfully cool, but outside it was scorching hot. If you walked 3 metres outside with your ice cream, it started to melt already.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the Carrefour, there was a cool box that you could connect to your car's 12V socket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ideal!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Fridge in your car!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Take that thing with you!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And we still have that cool box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Fancy coming to Terschelling too.<\/p>\n\n\n
There's only one problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Camping is, of course, wonderfully basic, but we do need to be able to charge our phones, e-readers, headphones, camera, speaker, and things like that. So, when booking the campsite, we ordered electricity as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But yes, that power supply is not suitable for a 12V connection on our cool box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Where could I get an inverter?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A DIY store can be found quickly on Google Maps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Multimate in Terschelling, and also close to the campsite. I can walk there easily. I hope they also have a 12-volt to 220-volt adapter. How lucky!<\/p>\n\n\n
Behind the till stands a friendly boy with freckles and reddish hair. He rings up the adapter for me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Just to be sure, he asks: \u201cWhat do you want to use the adapter for?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I'm explaining to him that it's for a cool box, which I want to connect to the campsite's 220-volt supply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cRight, so the question is whether that's going to work,\u201d says the cashier. \u201cHow many amps does the cool box need? This adapter can only handle 400 milliamps. Definitely not enough for a cool box.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Amperes? That was second-class physics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It feels like ages ago to me. I haven\u2019t a clue. I look at the boy blankly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYou know what?\u201d says the red-haired lad, \u201cwhy don\u2019t you pop round to the campsite and check how many amps the fridge uses? Then come back and let me know. I can solder a suitable adapter for you this evening after work. Just leave the adapter you\u2019ve just bought here \u2013 it\u2019s no use to you. Here\u2019s your money back.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You won't experience customer service like that at Adrem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And that's for the best. You'd best not let me solder electrical things together. All that comes of it is fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
