You've just got your driving licence and you want to start from your 18de<\/sup> birthday rent a car and a Road trip<\/a> to Europe, but is this actually allowed? A rental car on holiday offers the advantages of comfort and flexibility. However, we increasingly see that there is confusion about the possibilities of hiring a car from the age of 18 or 21 in the Netherlands and abroad. As an experienced car rental company, we would like to provide more clarity on this in this blog.<\/p>\n

Why is there a minimum age for renting a car?<\/h2>\n

Car hire companies are entirely free to set additional requirements and rules regarding the age of their customers in a rental agreement. Because insurance costs can be higher for young drivers, car hire companies often implement a minimum age. Insurance companies are the leading factor in this. Some companies even have a maximum age. Within the legally established rules, the rental company is therefore perfectly entitled to refuse to rent a car to individuals up to and including the age of 24. Car hire companies sometimes charge a surcharge for renting a car to a renter who does not meet a specific age norm. With this so-called young driver premium, a rental company essentially insures itself against the higher average risk of this specific young renter having an accident or causing damage to the vehicle.<\/p>\n

Hire a car in the Netherlands from 18 years old<\/h2>\n

Autoverhuurders hanteren in Nederland een minimumleeftijd en verwachten dat je op papier al enige rijervaring hebt. In Nederland vragen de meeste verhuurders minimaal 21 jaar en minimaal 1 jaar een geldig rijbewijs. Dat is geen wet maar een eis van de verzekeraar, en hij verschilt dus per verhuurder. Bij ons kan het al vanaf 18 jaar in onze kleinste categorie, mits je een jaar je rijbewijs hebt. Voor de meeste andere auto’s geldt 21 of 23 jaar en voor de grootste categorie\u00ebn en de 9-persoonsbus 25 jaar. Wanneer iemand 18 jaar is, net het rijbewijs heeft gehaald en 40 rijlessen heeft gehad, zal diegene waarschijnlijk beter kunnen rijden dan iemand die ook met 18 jaar het rijbewijs heeft gehaald, vervolgens 4 jaar geen auto rijdt en pas met 22 jaar een auto gaat huren. Helaas houdt een verzekeringsmaatschappij hier geen rekening mee. De minimale leeftijd verschilt tevens per verhuurder, bestemming en type auto. Onder de 23 jaar heb je bovendien maar een beperkte keuze aan auto\u2019s die je mag huren en voor een huurauto uit een grote categorie dien je zelfs minimaal 25 jaar oud te zijn. Car hire abroad from age 18<\/h2>\n

Age limits and surcharges for car hire are a worldwide phenomenon. As such, you'll often encounter them on holiday in a country outside of the Netherlands. Read the locally applicable conditions carefully before signing a rental agreement while on your trip, or book your hire car in advance with a foreign or Dutch car hire company. This way, you can choose the type, make, and size of car that's most suitable for your travel party from the comfort of your own home, with the advice of your parents, and avoid the situation where no comfortable cars are available upon arrival at your holiday destination.
