At least you're not alone. And it's not surprising. The Dutch weather is unpredictable. One week it's twenty degrees with sunshine, and the next week it looks like a winter wonderland in your garden. Therefore, many people don't think in time to switch their summer tyres for winter tyres. Or they know it's actually time for winter tyres, but wonder if they can save themselves the money and effort by simply leaving the summer tyres on the car. But one thing is certain: driving with summer tyres in the snow is anything but clever. In this blog, you'll read everything you need to know about it.

Summer tyres have shallower grooves in their tread than winter tyres, making them struggle more in snow. Instead of maintaining grip on snow by trapping it between the tread blocks (as winter tyres do), summer tyres compress the snow and only make the contact surface smoother.

In addition, summer tyres are harder than winter tyres because they contain less natural rubber. At winter temperatures below 7°C, this stiffness of the tyres can become a problem. Because the colder it gets, the stiffer the tyres become and the greater the chance of cracks. Therefore, if you drive on summer tyres in the snow, you run the risk of damaging your tyres. Read more here about how you can be held liable in the event of an accident abroad when driving without winter tyres..

Do you always need winter tyres in winter?

In the Netherlands, you are not obliged to use winter tyres in winter, but it is advisable. Using summer tyres in winter conditions is dangerous and increases the risk of tyre damage. If a mild winter is indeed on the way, you might get away with all-season tyres. However, these are not suitable for extreme winter conditions. This is mainly because they brake more slowly than winter tyres, posing a safety risk. However, winter conditions can also catch you by surprise on your journey. Read here what you need to do to get your car out of the snow when you are snowed in..

Are winter tyres always safer?

Winter tyres are for winter Not always safer than summer tyres. This is because they have slightly less grip on dry road surfaces than summer tyres at temperatures above freezing. Only at sub-zero temperatures and in winter conditions such as snow and ice are you better off with winter tyres. But since there is a high probability that you will encounter such conditions during a Dutch winter, it is advisable to opt for winter tyres. This is because it is very risky to drive on summer tyres in the snow.

Risks of driving with summer tyres in snow

We've actually already mentioned them at the start of the blog, but what are the biggest risks of driving with summer tyres in the snow? We’ve listed them for you:

Risk of skidding and other accidents

Summer tyres and all-season tyres have an increased risk of skidding when turning, accelerating, and braking due to their composition. Furthermore, summer tyres have low rolling resistance, which results in long braking distances on ice or snow. Thus, if you were to drive in snow with summer tyres and something or someone suddenly appeared on the road, it would take you longer to brake and the chance of an accident would be greater.

Risk of damage from cold temperatures

Summer tyres are not made for cold weather. The tyre treads will stiffen in snow and other winter conditions. This not only creates danger on the road, but also increases the risk of damage to the tyre itself. For example, summer tyres can lose their elasticity and can crack.

Tips for driving in the snow

Now that we've impressed upon you that you'd best not drive in the snow on summer tyres, we'd like to give you a few more tips about driving in the snow. The most important thing when driving in the snow is to remain calm. Always stay focused on the road and hold the steering wheel with both hands.

Some other tips for driving in the snow:

Always remove snow and ice from the windows first before driving away;
– Drive more slowly than usual;
– Take a larger braking distance than normal;
– Always look far enough ahead to be able to brake in time;
– Steer carefully and smoothly;
– Do not use cruise control (it is not designed for driving on slippery road surfaces).

If you have a winter trip planned and are unsure if your tyres are winter and snow-proof, choose to get a car hire in Sittard by Adrem Limburg.
